CABLE TRAY/LADDER SIZING

It has been so troublesome to check and figure out the cable tray / trunking / ladder (cable support) size once the bosses requested us to do coordination works.

We need to ensure that the cable support is correct so that the routing and space requirement could be determined. Without proper cable support size it could be because the design space is too big or too small.

However, this cable support sizing program just for reference only and not for absolute design. I have been using this application for some of my project and it seems that workable. As a designer we has to bold enough to determine the space requirement and nowadays client are not just like before, they are also engineers. So, bear in mind that “DO NOT SIMPLY GIVE AN ANSWER TO THE CLIENT IF YOU ARE ALSO NOT SURE” unless you already know that your client are not a technical person.

There is three type of cable installation for the cable laying on the tray or ladder. Which is as follows:-

1) Trefoil

2) 2 X 2 Arrangement

3) Flat

Most of the contractor, they will try to arrange the installation of the cable to ensure the size of the cable tray / ladder is minimum. Normally they will go for 2 x 2 cable arrangements. So, I also develop a copy of the program that it could calculate based on the 2 x 2 arrangement. I could say that having the 2 x 2 arrangement will give you space saving approximately 20%, and subject to nos. of cable installed.
